Transmission Myths That Aren't True

You would probably never think of damaging a costly investment willingly, but unintentionally causing damage is just the same. Transmission misinformation through the internet or word of mouth is a common problem that many have encountered. These myths can convince you to unwittingly perpetrate transmission problems or lose money because of your unit. Here are a few transmission myths to steer clear of.

Transmission Fluid Is All the Same

Transmission fluid is not one size fits all. Manufacturers mix specific combinations of fluids to address specific demands. There are many different fluids available. Do not use any transmission fluid other than your OEM recommended fluid to save your transmission from unnecessary damage.

Everything Is Replaced When the Transmission Is Rebuilt

A complete replacement during a transmission rebuild is not a rebuild. While damaged parts can be replaced, rebuilding a transmission out of brand new parts simply doesn’t make sense. A transmission rebuild should entail disassembling and re-assembling the transmission with a rebuild kit while replacing worn out parts, without replacing the entire transmission. Be wary if someone tries to convince you otherwise. If you’re having everything replaced in your transmission, you’re essentially getting a brand new one.

Just Buy a New Transmission

An entirely new transmission can cost up to $7,000, and many manufacturers don’t even offer new units. Having parts replaced during a transmission rebuild will save you money and help give your transmission a little more lifetime. The more you need replaced, such as the entire unit, the more money you’ll have to pay.

Taking care of your transmission is the key to giving it a long life. Don’t fall prey to myths that could potentially be detrimental to your transmission performance. The more truth you know about transmissions, the better you’ll be able to protect yourself from these myths.
